Wilson Hitchings es el último miembro en entrar a trabajar en el negocio familiar: la poderosa casa Hitching Hermanos, una de las más importantes en el comercio entre Estados Unidos y el Lejano Oriente. Su primer encargo es ir a Hawai a comprar la Plantación Hitchings, famosa casa de juego propiedad de la hija de la "oveja negra" familiar. Una vez allí, el sosegado pero astuto Wilson se encuentra frente a una feroz y adorable propietaria, a un peligroso lavado de dinero para financiar a los rebeldes chinos de Manchuria (nota para los que no saben de historia: en la década de 1930, Japón invadió China, creó el estado títere de Manchukuo y comenzó una furiosa guerra contra los insurgentes chinos) y aun amable, atildado y engañosamente inofensivo de apariencia agente secreto japonés llamado I.M.Moto.
John Marquand dio a luz en 1935, en las páginas del Saturday Evening Post (medio mucho más reconocido y respetado que los pulps de la época) a este espía del Sol Naciente, pulcro, educado y eficiente, y lo convirtió en el héroe de seis novelas (que se terminaron cuando Japón y USA entraron en guerra luego de Pearl Harbor para ovler en una última historia en 1957, años después del armisticio final). También hubo ocho películas protagonizadas por Peter Lorre (en maquillaje amarillo) en el papel protagónico que también fueron exitosas.
Esta es la tercera novela de la serie. Y es una lectura "mucho, mucho, mucho" (scomo suele decir el señor Moto) agradable. Marquand es un escritor vivaz, que crea personajes entretenidos, con una narración bien construída y de un sutil humor escondido en el relato (no por nada ganaría en 1937 el Pulitzer con su novela satírica The Late George Apley, que le terminaría de ganar el respeto del "establishment" literario.)
Respecto a los estereotipos del Peligro Amarillo en la historia, Marquand los tiene (hay una continua referencia a la absoluta otredad de los amarillos para Hitchings, que siempre tiene la sensación que hay códigos que él nunca podrá entender de los orientales) pero me da la sensación que los exagerados manierismos de Moto son una socarrona parodia a esa ídea típica del "oriental cortés" de la época. De hecho, Mr. Moto suena como una versión exacerbada hasta el absurdo de Charlie Chan.
Y aparte quiero rescatar la FA-BU-LO-SA tapa de Emilio Freixas, uno de los mejores dibujantes que dio la España franquista en lo relativo a la ilustración y el comic realista. Si las tapas venden un libro, esta debe haber hecho ganar millones a la gente de Molino.

Wilson Hitchings is the last member entering to work in the family business: the powerful house Hitching Brothers, one of the most important in the commerce between United States and the Far East. His first assignment is to go to Hawaii to buy the Hitchings Plantation, a famous gambling house property of the daughter of the "black sheep" family. Once there, the calm but astute Wilson is set against a ferocious and adorable lady owner, a dangerous money laundering scheme financing the Chinese rebels of Manchuria (note for the ones that don’t know history: in the decade of 1930, Japan invaded China, created the puppet state of Manchukuo and began a furious war against the Chinese rebels) and an elegant, kind and deceitfully inoffensive in appearance Japanese secret agent called I.M.Moto
John Marquand gave birth in 1935, in the pages of the Saturday Evening Post (a medium a lot more recognized and respected than the pulps) at this immaculate, educated and efficient spy of the Rising Sun, who became the hero of six novels (series that finished when Japan and USA went to war after Pearl Harbor). Also there were eight Movies starring Peter Lorre (in yellow makeup) that also were successful.
This is the third novel of the series. And it is a "very, very, very" (as used to say Mr. Moto) pleasant reading. Marquand is a lively writer, that creates entertaining characters, with a narration well built and of a tongue planted well in cheek (not casually, he would gain in 1937 the Pulitzer Prize with his satirical novel The Late George Apley, a work who would gain him the respect of the literary "establishment")
With respect to the stereotypes of the Yellow Peril planted in the history, Marquand has got many of them (there is a continuous reference to the absolute otherness of the yellow-skinned people; Hitchings always feels that there are codes that he never will be able to understand of the orientals) but the I got the sensation that the exaggerated mannerisms of Moto are a sarcastic parody to the typical idea of the "courteous oriental" of the time. In fact, Mr. Moto sounds as an exaggerated to the absurd version of Charlie Chan.
And, before I finish. I want to rescue the FA-BU-LOUS cover of Emilio Freixas, one of the better artists than gave Franco’s Spain in the illustration and realistic comic field. If the covers sell a book, this cover must have sold millions.
